Bougainvillea Care in North India Summers

The bloom-through-summer mindset

Bougainvillea is one of the few plants that actually rewards neglect. In the North Indian summer, the biggest mistake gardeners make is over-watering out of panic. Heat is not the enemy — soggy roots are.

Watering rhythm

Let the top 2 inches of soil dry completely before a deep watering. During peak May-June heat this may still mean daily watering for pots in full sun, but always check first. A mild dry spell triggers the plant to throw bracts.

Feeding for colour

Switch to a low-nitrogen, high-potassium bloom booster every 3 weeks. Too much nitrogen gives you a lush green bush with zero flowers.

Pruning

Prune hard after each bloom flush. Bougainvillea flowers on new growth, so cutting back drives the next wave of colour.
