How to Grow Vegetables from Seeds at Home in India

Nothing beats picking fresh vegetables from your own balcony or terrace. Growing veggies from seed is cheaper, gives you far more variety, and lets you grow chemical-free food at home. Here's how to get a productive kitchen garden going in Indian conditions.

1. Start with easy, high-yield veggies If you're new, begin with forgiving crops: tomato, green chilli, coriander, spinach (palak), okra (lady finger), fenugreek (methi) and amaranth. These germinate readily, grow fast, and reward you quickly β€” building the confidence to try more.

2. Pick the right season Most summer vegetables (tomato, chilli, okra, gourds, cucumber) are sown from February to June. Cool-season crops (spinach, coriander, carrot, radish, cauliflower, peas) do best sown from September to February. Leafy greens like coriander and spinach can be sown almost year-round in much of India.

3. Use the right container and soil Use pots or grow bags at least 8-12 inches deep for most veggies (bigger for tomato and gourds). Fill with a rich, well-draining mix of garden soil, cocopeat and compost. Good drainage holes are essential β€” waterlogged roots are the number one killer of vegetable seedlings.

4. Sow correctly Sow seeds two to three times as deep as they are wide. Small seeds (spinach, coriander, amaranth) are barely covered; larger seeds (okra, cucumber, beans) go 1-2 cm deep. Sow a few extra and thin to the strongest seedlings. Water gently with a fine spray and keep the soil evenly moist.

5. Sun, water and feeding Fruiting vegetables like tomato, chilli and okra need 5-6 hours of direct sun to produce well; leafy greens manage with 3-4 hours. Water in the morning, keeping soil moist but not soggy. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, feed every 2 weeks with compost tea or a balanced organic fertiliser to keep them productive.

6. Support, harvest and keep sowing Stake tomatoes and tall chillies as they grow. Harvest leafy greens by picking outer leaves so the plant keeps producing, and pick fruiting veggies regularly to encourage more. Sow a fresh batch of quick crops like coriander and spinach every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.

Quick troubleshooting - Seeds not sprouting? Soil too dry, too cold, or seeds too deep β€” re-sow shallower and keep moist. - Flowers but no fruit on tomato/chilli? Usually too little sun or poor pollination β€” move to a sunnier spot and gently shake flowering plants to help pollination. - Yellowing leaves? Often overwatering or nutrient shortage β€” check drainage and add compost.

A sunny balcony and a handful of seed packets are all you need to start. Try a ready-made starter pack of five easy veggies to get going in one go, then expand your kitchen garden season by season.
